District Choir: Irving Children's Chorus

Irving Children's Chorus

Irving Children's Chorus is the Irving District select choir. It was at one time the Irving Boys' Choir and the Irving Girls' Choir. The two choirs combined in 2004, under the direction of John Waynman. Linda Hoffmann took over the direction of the Irving Children's Chorus in 2006. Students in grades 3 through 5 audition at the beginning of the year at Stipes Elementary. New students may audition in January for the Spring session. Parents may contact their child's music teacher for information regarding auditions, or contact Linda Hoffmann via email. There is a $50 fee to cover the cost of uniforms, bus rentals, t-shirts, etc.

The Irving Children's Chorus performs several concerts throughout the year. The choir also performs two school tours, one in the winter and one in the spring, to encourage other students to join the select choir. An optional summer trip is offered for families interested in traveling with the Irving Children's Chorus. This trip is paid for by the families, however, fundraising is available. Past trips include San Antonio, Branson, and Washington D.C.

Rhythm Bee Counting

Rhythm Bee is a concept created by the Fine Arts Director, Dr. Alfred Green, aka Buzzy. Buzzy wanted students across the district to learn the same system when counting rhythm, so he introduced a learning system which focuses on the 5th graders. Rhythms in the Rhythm Bee includes the basic quarter notes, eighth notes, half notes, dotted half notes, whole notes, syncopations, and dotted quarter notes. After working on the counting system throughout the year, each elementary school in Irving selects 2-3 5th graders to compete at the Adminstration Building. Here, the students are given a measure of rhythm to read, individually, and are given the opportunity to receive a bronze medal at 80 beats per minute, a silver medal at 100 beats per minute, and finally, a gold medal at 120 beats per minute. Every child has the opporunity to leave the Administration Buiding with 3 medals each.

This year three 5th graders were selected to attend the Rhythm Bee. These students were Joseph Abraham, Mariah Anderson, and Marissa Broome. All three students were successful at the Rhythm Bee and brought home 3 medals each! We are very proud of them!

Brief Introduction

Welcome to the World of Music! My name is Linda Hoffmann. I started teaching Elementary Music in Irving in 1996, upon graduating from the University of Texas at Arlington. I've taught at many schools, such as Barton, Davis, Lively, Good, and Townley. I am currently the music teacher at Stipes Elementary. I teach general music to students in grades K-5, as well as piano lab for grades 2-5 before and after school. In addition to my regular task at Stipes, I am the Director for the Irving Children's Chorus, the select choir for the district.

Piano Lab

Piano Lab

Piano lab is an extracurricular class offered by Stipes Elementary before and after school. Registration for piano lab is at the beginning of the school year. The fee for Piano Lab is $160 for the entire year, paid at the time of registration. Students meet once a week for a 30 minute lesson. Typically, there are six students in the piano lab at a time. Each student works at his/her own pace, meeting their abilities and ensuring comprehension. A Piano Recital is provided at the end of the year for students to perform for the parents, family and friends. Space is limited for Piano Lab and students are highly suggested to stay the entire year. Teachers for Piano Lab are Jo Carol Adamson and Linda Hoffmann.

Stipes Music Program

The Stipes Music Program provides a world of opportunity for students in grades K through 5. Music is a language unique to all others, yet at the same time, is a universal language. Music has depth, texture, tonality. Music encompasses beat, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and tempo. Students at Stipes will explore music concepts and elements, apply music reading skills, and experience a variety of musical instruments. All students will have an opportunity to perform in their grade level PTA program. The PTA programs allow students to express themselves musically, featuring solos, ensembles, instruments, speaking parts, and movement. Although not a requirement, all students are encouraged to participate in PTA programs to truly embrace the gift of music.
